What is the RWMS?

The Remote Work Mastery Scale (RWMS) is a self-assessment tool that is designed to be a quick snapshot of the key factors, skills and abilities that affect your success in a remote work setting.

The RWMS covers a variety of aspects of remote work, including communication, collaboration, time management, adaptability, technology, and work-life balance. By understanding your strengths and areas for improvement, you can take proactive steps to enhance your remote work capabilities and overall performance.

The RWMS is a valuable tool for anyone who works remotely, whether you are a new remote worker or you have been working remotely for years. The results and report can help you:

  • Benchmark your remote work skills and environment, compare your scores across time or with your colleagues
  • Set goals for improvement in specific area, and take the test multiple times to measure your progress
  • Talk with your colleagues or line manager about improving the environment or gaining key resources and supports needed to make you more productive in your work.
  • Get feedback from others by sharing and discussing your results.

The RWMS is easy to use and can be completed in about 5 minutes. The assessment is broken down into six sections:

  • Communication: How effective is your communication with others in a remote setting?

  • Collaboration: How well do you work with with others in a remote setting?

  • Time management: How well do you manage your time in a remote setting?

  • Self-Motivation: How strong is your capability to drive your own work and persevere in the face of difficulty?

  • Technical Skills: How comfortable are you using technology and digital tools in a remote setting?

  • Working Environment: How well is your workspace optimized for your physical and psychological well-being?

After completing the assessment, you will receive a personalized report that provides detailed feedback on your strengths and areas for improvement. The report also includes suggestions for how you can improve your remote work skills and abilities.

Your scores

Your RWMS scores are based on a range of possible outcomes, with higher scores indicating stronger abilities in a particular area. The possible outcomes are based on score ranges that are organized into five categories:

  • Very High: You have exceptional capabilities in this area.

  • High: You have strong capabilities in this area.

  • Moderate: You have average abilities in this area, with room for improvement.

  • Low: You may struggle in this area, or it is not a priority for you.

  • Very Low: This is a major challenge, or not at all important to you.

It is important to remember that these scores are a reflection of your self-assessment, and you should consider them as a starting point for understanding your remote work capabilities. As you review your scores, think about how they align with your own experiences and what actions you can take to improve your performance in each area.

Navigating Company, Culture and Context

Remote work environments can vary greatly depending on factors such as company culture, team dynamics, and technology infrastructure. As you develop your remote work skills, it's important to be adaptable and open to change. This will enable you to thrive in a variety of settings.

Here are some tips for being adaptable and open to change in a remote work setting:

  • Be prepared to adjust your communication style. When you're not working in the same physical space as your team members, it's important to be more intentional about your communication. Use clear and concise language, and be sure to follow up with written documentation whenever possible.

  • Adopt new tools and technologies. Remote work often requires the use of new tools and technologies. Be willing to learn how to use these tools effectively, and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

  • Navigate different team dynamics. Every team has its own unique culture and dynamics. Be respectful of the different ways that people work, and be willing to adapt your own style to fit in with the team.

  • Set goals. Set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals for your remote work development.

  • Track your progress. Keep track of your progress towards your goals by using a journal, a spreadsheet, or another tracking tool.

  • Get feedback. Ask your manager, co-workers, or other trusted people for feedback on your remote work performance. This feedback can help you identify areas where you can improve.

  • Make adjustments. Based on your goals, progress, and feedback, make adjustments to your remote work development plan.
